CDC HIV Integration in Family
Planning Project
JSI completed and distributed an HIV needs assessment
and training plan in the Fall of 2002. The needs assessment was comprehensive
and included a secondary source review, site visits to each grantee,
a survey of providers, and a survey of clinic managers. The overall
report and grantee-specific results were sent to each grantee. Additionally,
the final report is posted on our website.
Based on the results from the needs assessment, JSI identified four
key themes that drive the Title X Family Planning Training Center's
HIV training activities: cultural competency, comprehensive HIV prevention
and risk assessment, community partnerships and linkages, and organizational
level integration of HIV. These themes provide the context for JSI's
training plan on HIV integration, which focus on the following three
activities:
- Developing a comprehensive training product, which purpose is
to assist the process of clinic-level institutional change regarding
HIV integration activities
- Integrating needs assessment findings into existing and future
Training Center activities; and
- Supporting HIV risk assessment activities carried out through
the CDC HIV Integration grant.
Using the additional HIV integration training funds
made available by OPA, the Training Center has developed of a comprehensive
and durable training product. The product is a manual entitled Region
I Title X Integrating HIV Prevention and Family Planning Services:
An Organizational Self-Assesment Manual (OSAM).
The OSAM is a step-by-step guide/manual that helps clinic managers
and staff to strategically work through how to provide integrated
HIV services in the context of the clinic's organizational structure
and resources. The end result of completing the modules in the OSAM
is a concrete plan for the clinic to follow toward more complete integration
of HIV services into family planning.

publications:
JSI Research & Training Institute has developed
this "Frequently
Asked Questions" brochure for clients receiving a new HIV-positive
diagnosis in Rhode Island for the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). In addition to the FAQ brochure, JSI has produced
a Referral
Guide which includes additional resources to accompany the patient
booklet.
The materials are designed to facilitate the provision
of high-quality referrals for HIV-positive clients and to increase
provider use of the HIV Rapid Test by providing referral resources
specific to Rhode Island at the tip of their fingers. These materials
were produced by JSI under a cooperative agreement with CDC to integrate
HIV prevention and testing into reproductive health care.
